Shin pain or shin splints refers to pain down the front bone of your lower leg, called the tibia. Anyone can suffer from shin splints but it is very common in runners, triathletes and in the sporting community. There are two common sites for shin splints:
Anterior shin splints – refers to the front portion of your tibia bone
Posterior shin splints – usually occurring more on the inside of your lower leg, along the tibia bone
What causes shin pain?
There can be many causes, some of which include:
Flat (pronated) feet
High arched (supinated) feet
Overuse or repetitive stress injuries (stress fractures)
Sporting activities – most commonly, running (especially on inclines) and jumping
Muscle strain or tears
How can I treat shin pain?
There are many treatments, some of which include:
Trigger point therapy
Kinetic and rigid taping
Muscle energy techniques
